In Sims 3, person won't throw out garbage?

I have it for Wii. In my house I have 2 people. Whenever I go into the kitchen they cover their noses. I know it's the trash bin that needs to be emptied. Whenever I try to get them to empty the indoor trash bin, they wave their noses and walk away. How can I get them to throw out the trash?
