Is michigan a nice place to live?

i was looking to living in shelby township, michigan and i heard its outside of detroit, and i heard detroits had gangsters and ghettos meaner than a grandmas cat! so i was wondering if michigan is a nice place to live in the US and if not, what is a nice place to live in the US? ty
